They have lost six of their last nine games, although they did finally get back on track on Monday with a 63-52 win over West Virginia.
They have dropped down the ranks in the eyes of the experts making
March Madness predictions as well as the media, and head coach Jim Boeheim isn't exactly pleased.
He hasn't appreciated the fact that the media has been very down on his team, which suffered through a tough stretch but appears to be out of it. In a town where there aren't any other headlining sports acts, the media has been very critical of the young team, the coach and virtually everything else imaginable.
Boeheim basically wasn't pleased that the media was focusing on a tough eight-game stretch where the Orange had reaped just two wins versus focusing on the fact that the team was still 20-6 by the end of it.
Truth be told, the Orange are a college basketball powerhouse and the expectations are very high for them. Even in a tough conference like the Big East, they are expected to do well on a yearly basis and produce a winner. When they struggle even in the smallest of stretches - the media is going to remind them that they are falling below expectations. Boeheim just feels the criticism was a little too harsh, especially when you consider that four of the six losses were to teams ranked No. 15 or higher.
Recently, the Orange had been having problems defending the three-point line and on Monday, it wasn't much better. The Orange gave up 11 three-pointers to West Virgina, who shot 50% from behind the arc.
Regardless of what is said off the court in the press, Boeheim knows his team has to tighten up in that respect or they aren't going to be lasting in the NCAA Tournament very long.
